The Little Piece of Metal That Once Had an Important Job

Before molded plastic handles and modern hinges became commonplace, simple metal hardware like this was an essential part of everyday equipment.

On farms and around the home, sturdy metal containers were
used for almost everything. They carried milk, water, animal feed, tools, and countless other necessities.

The wire bail made these containers much easier to carry, while the small attachment point helped distribute the strain each time the bucket was lifted.

And because the fitting was made almost entirely from metal, there was very little that could go wrong.

Simple, Strong, and Built to Last

There were no complicated mechanisms to maintain and no plastic components to crack with age.

When properly fitted, the metal attachment could withstand years of pulling, swinging, and general wear and tear. That’s one reason examples can still be found attached to old galvanized buckets and containers decades after they were made.

The design may look basic by today’s standards, but that was precisely the point.

It was inexpensive, practical, easy to manufacture, and remarkably durable.
